I chose these activities on evolution and natural selection because I feel like I learned the most about evolution and natural selection by doing these activities especially the DNA video that Harkirat and I did. For the video we had to decide ourselves what we where going to say and what we thought was important to put in the video. Also we had to draw or represent each topic in the video and that also helped us have a better understanding of the topic and helped us to see how much we knew.

I chose the post about the different types of phylums that we dissected becuase I thought it represented the requirements of living things the most out of all my other blog posts. I researched the roundworm from the phylum nematoda, the erathworm from the phylum annelida, the grasshopper from the phylum arthropoda, the starfish from the phylum echinodermata and the frog from the phylum vertebrata. Dissected these organisms helped me understand the complexity and simplicity of each phylum. For example the frog and rat were more diverse and complex inside and out form the roundworm and earthworm. I found that each dissection helped me understand how each organism lives and what it needs to survive.

CURIOSITY AND INQUIRY
In biology 11 we did a lot of researching on the internet and looking for organisms that we found interesting and one of the most interesting organisms that I had found was the Cordyceps, which is a type of fungi that takes over and organisms body. This fungi is very interesting and for me it was the most interesting thing I ever searched on the internet. Also I researched about Cnideria and I learned so may things about it. Having the opportunity to go on the internet was very fun and cool because it gave us a chance to be curious and look for things that we might not have had the chance to learn about in biology. It gave us a chance to share our findings with the class so that everyone could learn and talk about it.



Question 2
After taking Biology 11 I have become more curious about the environment and things around me. I notice different things when I am outside that I didn't notice before and even when I am watching movies I see things that I have learned about in biology that I wouldn't have known about if I hadn't taken this course.
It makes me even more happy that whenever I go out and see things I know about I can happily share it with my family and friends especially to my little brother and cousins who are so curious to the things around them.



Assignment and completion: B
I know I did most of my blogposts but there were some that i didn't do. When we were looking through the microscopes I didn't post all of the pictures that we took of the slides. I also didn't post all of the bacteria posts, but all of the other posts I completed. It was only about 3 or 4 posts that I didn't do.

Assignment Quality: A
Even though I missed some blog posts all of the assignments that I did complete are done to the best of my capabilities. I put a lot of effort into my blog posts and making sure they were correct before I posted them and I didn't rush through any just to get them posted.

Skills: A
I feel like I have obtain a lot of new skill in biology. I really enjoyed looking through the microscopes and looking at all the different slides. I like that we stayed away from doing a lot of tests and instead doing a variety of different activities like cut and paste notes and going outside and looking for pine cones and acorns and dissecting. It was a new approach to learning and I really enjoyed it and felt that it still had the same values as doing tests and worksheets. This way was more interesting and more engaging for the class and myself. We got to voice out our curiosities and research and share together as a class.

Your Learning: A
Like I said before, this new approach to learning was really good. I felt more engaged in the things we were doing because we got to ask each other questions and be curious together.  This wasn't about finding the answers to a certain question and writing it down for marks. This was more about what we wanted to learn and I liked it because I will be more involved and happy learning about the things I am interested in rather than someone just throwing a whole bunch of information at me.

First Final Question- Animal Kingdom

In bio 11 out of all the dissections that we have done, the grass frog was the most diverse. The grass frog is from the phylum vertebrata class amphibia. Animals in this phylum and class have an inner body that is similar to the human inner body.The inside of the frog was very similar to the human body. It had many organs like a liver, kidneys, lungs, a heart, a pancreas, intestines and a gall bladder and a brain They also have a spinal cord. All of these organs look similar to the ones humans have. The lungs of a frog are like the lungs of a human that serve the same purpose which is circulating oxygen. Frogs also have brain which helps with their nervous system and the heart helps pump blood throughout the body. They also have intestines for digesting food.

The grasshopper is different than the frog. The grasshopper is from the phylum arthropoda. The grasshopper has different features than the animals from the phylum vertebrata like the frog. Grasshoppers have walking legs and jumping legs. The smaller set of wings are hidden underneath the bigger set of wings. Grasshoppers have spiracles which are for respiration. Air goes through the spiracles and filtered by hairs in tubes called tracheae. Grasshoppers have compound eyes and simple eyes. Female grasshoppers have an ovipositor that they use to lay eggs and they have ovaries. Grasshoppers also have salivary glands, a mouth, a heart, a ventral nerve cord, a stomach , a rectum and an anus. The outside of a grasshopper is an exoskeleton.

The starfish is from the phylum echinodermata. Starfishes are not very complicated animals and they don;t have many organs. The outside of the starfish is "spiny skined". Starfishes have five arms/points. Starfishes have a water vascular system. Radial canals with bulbs are on the inside and tubed feet extend out from the bottom surface. Starfishes have external fertilization where sperm and eggs are release into the water.
They have a complete digestive system with the mouth in the bottom and an oral surface in the middle.The cardiac stomach comes out of the mouth to digest prey externally. It then sucks the prey in to the pyloric stomach and anus.Many digestive glands fill the arms. They have asexual reproduction and they can regenerate lost limbs. They have no brain. Instead they have eyespots on the ends of their arms to detect light. They have bad respiration systems. They use diffusion through tube feet. Excretion is also through tube feet.


The earthworm is from the phylum annelida. Worms from this phylum are found in wet, moist areas. It's digestive system goes throughout it's body starting form the mouth and ending at the anus.Food, waste and respiratory gasses go through the same goes through the same circulatory system. It breathes through its skin, which is different than the frog because the frog has lungs that help it breath. It has a central and peripheral nervous system. Earthworms are hermaphrodites which means that it has both male and female organs. This is different than animals in the phylum vertebrata because they have separate male and female animals. Earthworms don't have a skeleton. It is similar to the roundworm which is in the phylum nematoda but is not similar to grasshoppers. Earthworms are segmented. The sexual organs are found in segment 9 to 15.
Ovaries and oviducts in segment 13 release eggs through female pores that are found in segment 14. Sperm is release from segment 15. Earthworms can regenerate lost segments which is similar to the starfish that is in the phylum echinodermata but this varies between the type of earthworm specie and how much damage it is.

Second Final Question

In biology 11 I learned about so many new organisms through doing blog posts becuase it gave me a chance to go online and search things on the internet which not a lot of other biology classes do.  We searched so many things like organisms with celebrity names. For this blog I chose a fossil that was named after Johnny Depp because of its scissor-like hands that Johnny Depp had in his movie Edward Scissorhands. We also dis a blog post about and amazing/interesting plant and the one I found is called The Deadly Cordyceps which is a deadly fungi that takes over the body of an insect and controls it's brain and slowly kills it. We also did a blog post on an arthropod and I did mine on The Giraffe Weevil. The Giraffe Weevil is a weevil that has a long neck like a giraffes which I thought was pretty unique. The long neck helps the weevil to adapt to it's environment by making it easier to build nests and for fighting.

I think my best blog post was the Cnideria post because I did a lot of research for it and talked about respiration , excretion, feeding, digesting, reproduction, circulation, and movement. I learned a lot about Cnideria by doing this post. This post stands out becuase it's catagorized and it has pictures. It is more organized than my other posts.

Finding Nemo

While we were watching Finding Nemo in biology I saw things that we learned in biology like a flat worm. I also saw a lot of sea sponges which would be under the phylum Porifera. After seeing one or two things that you learned about makes you more curious and you pay more attention to the movie because then you try to see if you can spot any other things that you have learned about.  You can relate adaptation to Finding Nemo because when Nemo gets taken away and is put into the fish tank with the other fishes you see how the other fishes adapt to living in the tank especially Gill who is also from the sea.

Arthropod- The Giraffe Weevil

The giraffe weevil also known as Trachelophorus giraffa, is a weevil that is found in Madagascar.The giraffe weevil can grow up to 25 millimeters. It has a black body and has red wings. The female giraffe weevil has body a length of just under an inch. It was discovered in 2008 and has a long neck like a giraffe which is and adaption that helps in building nests and fighting. The neck can grow up to 3 times longer than a female weevil's neck. When a female giraffe weevil lays it's egg, it rolls u p a leaf and lays the egg within in. It will then cut off the leaf from the plant to let the egg hatch. The leaf provides protection and food for the newborn giraffe weevil.

Cnideria

Feeding
Cnideria feed in many different ways like predation, absorbing dissolved organic  chemicals, filtering food particles out of the water, and getting nutrients from symbiotic algae within their cells. Most cnideria get food from predation.

Respiratory
Cnideria don't have any respiratory organs. Both cell layers absorb oxygen and expel carbon dioxide into the water. When water in the digestive cavity becomes stale, it has to be replaced and the nutrients that had not been absorbed yet are also expelled with it.



Circulation
Cnidaria don't have any organs or special tissues that are for circulation. They would get nutrients through diffusion.

Exertion
Gland cells in the gastroderm release enzymes that turn the food into a slurry. It circulates through the digestive cavity and throug connecting tunnels , so the gastroderm cells can absorb the nutrients. Absorbtion takes a few hours and digestion takes a few days. The nutrients circulate by water currents produced by cilia in the gastroderm or by muscular movements so the nutrients reach all parts of the digestive cavity. Nutrients reach the outer cell layer by diffusion. Indigestable remains of prey are expelled through the mouth. The main waste product of cells' eternal  processes is ammonia which is removed by external and interanl water currents.

Response
Cnidaria have no brains or central nervous systems.Instead they have decentralized nerve nets consisting of sensory neurons that generate signals to respond to types of stimulus like odors, motor neurons that tells muscles to contract and cobwebs of intermediate neurons to connect them. Intermediate neurons also form  ganglia that act as local coordination centers. The cilia of cnidocytes detect physical contact. Nerves inform cnidocytes when prey or attackers are detected. Most communication between nerve cells are through chemical synapses.

Movement
Adult cnidaria are either swimming medusae or sessile polyps. In medusae the only supporting structure is the mesoglea. Medusae swim by a form of jet propulsion. Hydras and some sea anemones move slowly over rocks. 

Reproduction
Sexual reproduction involves a complex life cycle with noth polyp and medusa stages. All known cnidaria can reproduce asexually by various means in addition to being regenerated when fragmented.

Plant Photo Journal







Mosses:
We found the mosses around our school. Mosses need to live in moist areas because they need water for reproduction and to get nutrients. Mosses grow close to the ground because they don't have vascular tissues,so they get water throughout the plant by using diffusion. They can also grow on rocks because since mosses need moist environments to live in the rocks found on those areas are suitable for mosses to grow on.

Ferns:
Ferns need to live in moist environments because they have vascular tissues that help them transport water throughout the plant and to cells. They also need water to reproduce.The structure of plants and ferns are different because ferns are vascular and mosses are non-vascular. The vascular structure allows ferns to grow taller. Also ferns have a horizontal root-like structure which is called rhizomes. Ferns need to grow in the soil to get nutrients and minerals.

Gymnosperms:
Gymnosperms can live in varied environments because of they do not require water for reproduction.Instead they use pollen for reproduction.Also gymnosperms produce seeds.The difference between pollination and fertilization is that pollination is when pollen is transfered to the stigma of a plant and fertilization is when an egg and sperm join together.

Angiosperms:
Angiosperms are well adapted to life on land because they can depend on insects to transfer pollen or they can also depend on the wind to carry the pollen through the air and transfer it to another plant.The roots help them absorb water.The purpose of the fruit is to protect the flower and make sure the seed gets dispersed.

Pollination:
Pollination is when the male gametophyte comes into contact with the female
parts. 
Cross-pollination is when a pollinator takes pollen from one plant and transfers it to another plant. Self-pollination is when a plant puts pollen into itself and reproduces without the help of another plant.

Angiosperm Classification:
We dissected a dicot plant. It is a dicot plant because it had more than 3 petals and the leaf had branched veins. The stigma was in three parts.

The Deadly Cordyceps

The cordycep is a killer fungi that releases its spores which gets into the bodies of insects and takes it over. The fungi controls the brain of the insect and slowly kills it. Other insects that are infected by the fungi are wuickly taken away the the other insects in its family and are dumped away so the other insects in the colony also don't get infected. After the insect dies the body of the cordycep arupt from the body of the dead insect. Comparing Acorns and Pinecones

The difference between an acorn and a pine cone is that they are from difference trees.
An acorn is from a deciduous oak tree and a pine cone comes from a coniferous pine tree.
An acorn and a pine cone both have seeds.
An acorn depends on biological seed dispersal agents to move the acorn beyond the mother tree and into areas it can germinate in. 
A pine cone seed gets carried away by the wind when the a pine cone ripens because of their parachute mechanism of the wings on the seeds.

Midterm Evaluation

Classification and Taxonomy:
For classification and taxonomy I chose the classification quiz because I got 14/15.

I also thought I did well on the classification project. We had to create our own species and give them names based on how they looked.

Evolution:
For evolution we made a DNA video and I thought my partner and I did really well on that project and from this project I knew what I had learnt about DNA and evolution.
  (This I a picture of what my partner and I said about evolution in our DNA video.)
We also made an evoltuoin poster where we glued pictures that we thought each species would evolve into.

Also the Evolution and Natural selection blog that I posted also helped me understand natural selection. I had searched up why flamingos have long necks and legs.

I am also proud of the evolution booklet Harkirat and I did. I think we did a really good job and put a lot of effort into it.



Viruses:
For viruses I chose the quiz we had on viruses because I got 16/20.

Bacteria:
For bacteria I chose the bacteria and protist quiz because I got 20.5/21.

I also chose the bacteria growth lab that we did and also the bacteria play-do models that we made.The bacteria growth lab was interesting because we got to see bacteria grow and spread, and we got to see which liquids kill bacteria.

I think I do well in completing my assignments and putting effort into my work.I also think I do well in completing my blog assignments.I am always on time and prepared for class. My most powerful learning experience in biology is doing the blog posts because when we had to do blog posts on things that we had to search up ourselves, I not only learned about the thing my blog post was about but I also learned about other things that I came across on the internet. Right now I think I am at an A at 88%
